From the story, we know that different people have different comment about the Zaabalawi. The author’s father believed that said Zaabalawi’s a true saint of God, a remover of worries and troubles. The author father’s old friend believed that Zaabalawi is a man of miracles. Moreover, for the people in the stories, they believed Zaabalawi is a mysterious person and he is full of magic power. If people have trouble, just find him and received his blessing, everything would be become better and better. In my opinion, I thought Zaabalawi is not as powerful as these people said. He was just a common person. In fact, I thought he does not exist. It would be a hope. If we have hope, we could be live better and better.
Zaabalawi is everything the individuals in the story believe him to be. Some think he a drifter, some a healer, some say a saint. His actions as described by the people that knew him, fit the different titles that each person gave him. It seems that Zaabalawi is capable of whatever the individual believes he is capable of. I think the main character, does not really believe he will ever find Sheikh Zaabalawi, so he will continue to search and never quite find him.
I think Zaabalawi is a character that people who try to find him and obtain a fount of wisdom. When they find Zaabalawi, is also meaning that they find their inner peace within themselves. But people do not realize that Zaabalawi is actually inside of themselves in the form of spirit and peace. In the story, the narrator portrays that Zaabalawi as an ambiguous figure (a god) who could work miracles of healing.
There is no Zaabalawi in the world, or he only exists in people’s mind. No one can see him and touch him, or people can see him after he is drunk. Different people have their different image of Zaabalawi. He symbols people’s hopes, their desires, and their beliefs. I think it’s just like God to us. No one or say few of us have seen God, but everyone believes his existence. Different people and different cultures have their own God, like Buddha to most of Asian, God to most of Western. We always look for our God, and believe he is beside us. When we face the difficulty, we believe God will help us out. Also, I wonder if people create Zaabalawi, just like the question I always ask myself, “Does God create human, or human create God?”
The narrator think Zaabalawi is the only man he who can cure his illness. In the story, the narrator believes Zaabalawi is a famous saint of his fater's generation. However, nowadays, the young people don't know him, and the older people almost forget about him. Everybody don't see him for a long time except for a drunk man. Who is he? what is he? Who knows. The story gives me a feeling that Zaabalawi is just a mere myth.
Zaabalawi is considered as a man of miracle though for some he was a saint, for others he was a charlatan whom they made fun out of him and for others he was a healer. For the sick man who is looking for him, Zaabalawi is a healer.
To me he was a almost like a disciple for the lord who has healing powers. I believe because he had heard so many stories. That to him he did seem to be a saint or a high priest that could help heal his sickness. The he took his father on a quest to look for that saint of the lord to help him get better.
Reading again this poem, it gave me the image of Zaalabawi not as a man but a mixture of hope, courage, moral, righteousness and other good things which for now I don't have the exact words. All the persons the narrator has met, because they were referred to him as Zaalabawi's friends or persons that Zaalabawi frequently meets, have done good things while Zaalabawi was present with them. They all have no doubt that Zaalabawi is alive but they don't know where he is. When i interpret this, it comes to my mind that we have to have hope for things to become good as we want them, so, hope is alive, and in order to keep hope alive we don't have to lose hope. It is like we know that there is a hope that one day, that particular thing we want would be accomplish, but for now, there is no any sign of it, therefore, we keep on hoping. Hence, all the persons that the narrator met were telling him not lose hope, because, one day, he will be cured. I conclude that Zaalabawi is a combination of hope and other good things in life, in addition, he is a miracle that happens to our life.
Nobody knows who Zaabalawi is, but actually it is a hope existing in people's minds. Zaabalawi is anything that can help out the individuals in the story when they suffer, or even can come true the dreams what they want and think. Because the individuals never know who or what Zaabalawi is, they are searching constantly and believing Zaabalawi is existing in somewhere strongly. In the story, the main character never stops looking for Zaabalawi, and I guess one of the searching reasons is that he wants to confirm whether he and other individuals have a right understanding of Zaabalawi.
According to the story, Zaabalawi is a saint who is known to cure people of illnesses through miracles. However, the identity of Zabalawi can also be interpreted as a higher spiritual awareness that people are in search for.
in short, Zaabalawi is a hope who the narrator searches for him. The narrator is not a sick person, but he loses the faith in God. The development of Science and technology makes us believe the absent of God's Mercy. The Narrator searches for the self-identity and the inner peace which his father was reached. Zaabalawi is all of us who can faith in religion as all the characters in this story believed that he is alive although they did not know meet him. it is an evidence to be sure that zaabalawi is a hope
