In the story the angel is treated very differently from what you would expect. I would assume that angels would be glorified, but in the story the humans are exploiting the angel. They treated him like an animal by trapping him in a cage and made money off of him. After the craze was over and there was no more money to be made, the family saw him as a burden or pest. You should feel blessed if an angel was living in your house, but instead the wife compared it to hell! They made him sleep in a shed when he should have received the best hospitality one can provide. I not only think that Marquez is commenting on the church, but also the evils of humanity.
In the beginning they saw the old man as someone they can take advantage and make a profit out of by making people pay them for every time they wanted to see him, like a petting zoo. But when the popularity of the old man with enormous wings was crushed by the spider woman they saw him as an annoying burden now that they can't make money off him.
At very first, the "angel" is treat like a money making machine...however, after he's market was beaten by the spider woman, he lost the position in the family's heart. Eventhough, he made lots of money for the family, he still can't get any profit from the family. The family rebuid their house but the angel was still live in the chicken cage... Angel is just something you can make profit to the evil mind people. That's why angel want to escape at the very end...
Since the old man with enormous wings is rare, many curious people came and want to see what an angel looking like, thus, the people live around the angel make lots of money from tourists. However, they never care the old man if is really an angel, they just thought the old man was some kind of strange creature. When they can't make money from the old angel, they thought him just a useless burden; even when the old angel left, they felt get rid of a burden.
