The Guest #5

What does the final paragraph indicate about Daru's decision to allow the Arab to decide for himself if he should go to the authorities or escape?

  1. Luckily I have covered this answer in question #4 and I will repeat it here.

I don't think Daru was saying go and give yourself to the authority, but he was giving him the chance to escape. Here there are two different behaviors of Daru which are in conflict, one is that he wants him to escape the other is that he is telling the Arab to go and give himself to authority. From my point of view, Daru wants that the man would be arrested, because he has killed. In another he wants to give him his liberty because he has understood that the man is not harmful. So instead of telling him to escape he told him, that he deserves to be imprisoned but the choice of whether to go to prison or to escape is up to him. Therefore he gave him that choice.

  2. “’You handed over our brother. You will pay for this.’” From this sentence, we know that Daru didn’t want to take sides in the colonial conflict in Algeria. He didn’t want to hand the Arab in. “In this vast landscape he had loved so much, he was alone.” From this sentence, we know that He lived in the place that was not belonged to him, and he was so isolated there. These reasons indicate why Daru decided to allow the Arab to make his own dicession.

  3. Daru notices that is no longer his place according to “In this vast landscape he had loved so much, he was alone.” In addition, he has to take the responsibility for his decision by his own.
