Work We Hate #3

What should we consider more important-- a career that makes a great deal of money, or a career that betters the world?

  1. when we are thinking about what is important for a career (much money or better for the world) everyone has different opinion about that. For me, I prefer a career that makes me happier than earn more money; in the same way, it can help the world in the future. In short, if you earn more money it doesn’t mean you will happy and satisfy about what you have. People always say “Money can’t buy happiness”. If someone can have a career that is better for the world and he/she happy about that, it would be great.

  2. a world without monetary means as a way of living would be an ideal world - that is the kind of world I'd like to live in. Of course, it's idealistic, which means it'll never happen. In any case, career rules over capital, but a career of philanthropic worth is good as well. This leads me to a question, if money was no longer an essential factor of survival, wouldn't the world be better anyways?

  3. Personally I see this topic in an economic point of view in which when an individual strives for personal achievements (in this case making a great deal of money) in reality the society (or world) as a whole will benefit from it also. For example, a company may sell prescriptive drugs for their own benefit, but part of their revenue will go towards innovation in production. This innovation will ultimately reduce the price of drugs and make it more affordable for the people. It is possible to still be wealthy and help the world. Ultimately, I believe it is more important find a job that helps the world, but it wouldn't hurt if you were paid well for doing so =].

  4. I think we should consider more in a career that betters the world, because we represent and make impact on one’s life, and our unique view of works help us to change our world become a better living place. When one gets older, watching back what one has accomplished in his/her life , he/she will eventually appreciate herself/himself more instead of making a great deal of money, and his/her works will be more meaningful.

  5. It takes a great mind to put others before yourself. Those are the ones who look for what to do for their country and not for what their country can do for them. These are the only ones who would choose a career that betters the world over one that widens their bottom line. This ofcurse is more honorable to do.

For me however, I prefer to pursue a career that gives me money over one that betters the world. I would be the first to go for one that betters the world if it would widen my bottom line at the same time. I have responsibilities most of which are financial. Ofcourse I want to contribute to the good of mankind. Paying my taxes is one way of doing this, eventhough it is my civic duty. I also love to give alms and help the poor. I make donations that I neve want back while filing for tax returns.

A good job that pays a lot of money puts you in a better stead to help and give back to the society. Oprah makes huge donations to schools, Ellen Degeneres is always helping people. They are making money and also bettering the world!

  6. The answer to that question depends on the state of mind of the person being asked. I believe we should all work towards a career that makes us happy. Every one has a different idea of what would make them happy. My personal idea of what would make me happy is to become educated enough to positively influence policy change and hopefully better my community. I would also be happy if I made enough money to live comfortably and be able to help support my family. I have to find a balance between a career that influences others to be positive and makes enough money so that my family and I can live comfortably.

I feel that if you pursue a career in what makes you truly happy, you will put in the effort to make enough money to live comfortably and your passion and enthusiasm towards the work that you love could influence someone else in a positive way.

  7. I came from poor country where most people struggle to make ends meet in their day-to-day life. Work is very hard to find and food is in scarce. If you ask me what is more important to me and most people back home I would choose making more money. I like dtwelve89 view of the question (from economic perspective.) If people make more money it will help better the economy of the country and the lives of the people. Analogy to this is when Flight Attendants announce “YOU MUST put on the mask FIRST before you attend to your child”. The reason this is, the care giver has to be conscious in order to help save the child. When people have all the necessity of life, then they are willing to work to better the world around them.

  8. One point I forgot to mention on my first post is, that using the money for the right causes can also help better the world. WHO report shows there are 1.02 billion people in hunger world wide. Donating money to those people will help better the world.

  9. There is a famous saying in Chinese: “Money makes the mare go.” In fact, money is very important for us. Without money, we cannot do anything .For me, I think money is more important. Without money how we can support our families. Sometimes, we have no choice. We don't like the work, but we need to do that. If our hands stopped, our mouth stopped. I think that's why most people want to come to the United State because they believe they can find a better job in America.

  10. I agree with viewpoints of Rebecca. I think this is a true reflection of most people. A long time ago, when I studied at school, I dreamed of getting a career that better my country. I hoped I could contribute my efforts to my country's development. However, people is living in the actual real world. What do support our daily life? How can we make a living? More and more existence need money. Money is not everything, but without money, we can do nothing. We are just ordinary people, so we like to take care of our life first. Also, after having amount of money, we have better ability to contribute to the world. As a result, ordinary people prefer to get a job that earns a great deal of money.

  11. I think that a majority of people would pursue a career that makes a great deal of money, because people simply don't care about the rest of the world besides themselves. Sure people donate money once in a while, but that amount isn't going to make the world a better place. We all hear people saying they hate the job that their at, and yet they are still working there, they do it because of the money. If they didn't care about the money they would've left a long time ago. They could have help clean the streets for free or work at a volunteer place. People don't do those things because it doesn't benefit them.

  12. A career that make money is what everyone chooses because it how people survive in this time period, everything in this world cost money and society has not evolved further enough where money is not important to us. If we can change the minds of people where a society can get anything they want then there will be peace through mankind, and I believe if we just wipe out the human emotion factor it could change this word.

  14. I would consider a career that betters the world more important. But let's talk about our daily life and what we look for in our daily life. To be honest, I have always priorities my selfishness than to what makes this world better. Every morning when I go out from my house I think on how to get a career which makes me earn more money than to get a career which makes the world better. So I find different what I believe from what I want, this shows me that I am aware of the career for better world but find it hard to ignore the career for better money

  15. In my point of view, I will choose a career that betters the world. If I can make a lots of money, but the forest, ocean or other living things are dead. Therefore, there are no reason for me to spend my money. People earn money to keep their lives and to enjoy what they want. However, when the nature is dead, there will be nothing left. Nowadays, there are lots of jobs that are deal with the environment protection. In my mind, we should save our nature and keep them for our next generation. One day, we might have our child and they might ask you, "What is the tree looks like?" If there is no more trees, or even grasses, what will be the answer for them? Would you like to use your expensive and high technique computer to show your child what is the nature looks like? You might use the three-dimensional graph and the 5.1 surround sound in the future to show them. However, would you feel sorry to them or would you regret? If this person is me, I think I will because all of the things that I show them are fake. I cannot even let them touch it , smell it or feel it. Sometimes, money can buy many things, but not everything that money can buy or even create again. For example, ice melting is a big problem and human is finding a way to solve this problem. Some of the governments think they may produce a giant ice and through it into the ocean. However, the scientists calculate the possibility and say it won't really work and it wouldn't last for a long time and we have to use a large amount of money to do this project. There are still many projects are going on, but not even one works. Finally, what can we do? They say, "A way can protect our nature, our earth, and it is recycle." After this problem shows up, I think we should do something that can save our nature or make the world better rather than earn money for ourselves only.

  16. I agree with Darius Chan "If I can make a lots of money, but the forest, ocean or other living things are dead. Therefore, there are no reason for me to spend my money."
Perhaps the reason the world is the way it is may be due to too many people putting money first. We aren't going through a recession because there were too many people wanting to make a better world and not putting money into the economy. But because those making the most money became overly greedy with it.

As long as there are people on this planet who are healthy enough to work the monetary means of living will exist. But without people willing to make that possible there will be no use for they money. For this reason I believe money should be secondary.

  17. i would choose a career that better the world than a career that make a lot of money. it does not mean that money is not important because without it we cannot do anything in today society. if you have a job that make a lot of money, you can donate that money to needed people which would make the world better. however, i think we can also make the world better even if we don't have a lot of money. we can also use your time and energy to help others instead. for example, we can volunteer at the children hospital or community food bank. everyone can contribute to help others any way they can. it does not always has to be about giving money to make the world better.

  18. When I read this question, I think these two choices should not choose either one, it should be chosen one after the other, or we can say after we get enough money, than we may have ability to betters the world. As many classmate said above, without money, we can do anything. Everyone needs money, and so we have to work and work to continue our life. We don't want to be a burden for others, so we have to take care of ourselves first. But life is not only for a great deal of money, even if we own the whole world, but that is only you have, we are still alone. So, if there is a career that can get a lot of money, I think everyone will choose to do it, even if we don’t like it, for some reasons, we will be willing to do. After periods, when we satisfy our life, when we have time, energy and more extra money, we will devote ourselves to the world for sure.

  19. It is a easy question to me because I definitely choose money. I am just a lay person, I need money. Since I have to concern about money for living. Actually, money is my motivation for studying. I am willing to work for a job betters the world with a good wage. However, I won't consider about jobs without good paying to better the world.

  20. I think a career that makes a great deal of money and a career that betters the world are both important, but a career that makes a great deal of money is more important than a career that betters the world. I think the fundamental purpose of having career and working with the career is development of us and furthermore the development of the world. Money is also important for our lives but it is just the mean that keep our lives. Although we do not have a lot of money, we can keep our lives well, using the money wisely. The World in which we live has been changed and developed by our working. That is we would have better and more convenient life by our careers. Therefore we should use our careers to make the better world, focusing on the fundamental purpose of having career. And when we live with that attititude we can have more plentiful and worth life.

  21. As a students, I think to make a great deal of money is more important indeed. In this society, money are very important to all of us, we study a B.A degree in order to get a better career and earn more money for ourselves.Base on the fact, only money can provide us a better and quality life. Therefore, I also agree that since we have a better career will soon make the world better.
