Some people think that we often let our preconceptions get in the way of allowing us to see the magic and mystery of the world. In other words, because we were taught that something should appear a certain way-- for example, an angel should be young and majestic-- we may miss that very thing when it actually arrives and stands directly in front of us.
Do you think many people miss out on certain important aspects of life because of their narrow preconceptions? Because they try to control the world too rigidly, rather than understanding things on their own terms?

Robert Theobald traveled creating an alternate world, he posed a question: "Just what it is we humans are truly capable of becoming?" Our preconceived notions represents what we believe is to be true to an exclusion of all other possibilities. This preconception is our universe, made up of a box compiled with our beliefs, values, ethics, morals, knowledge, and language. To sum up, our worldview paradigm limits our ability to think and understand.
ReplyDeleteT.v is one the worlds biggiest way to communicate how we as a society should think and act or how we look or how we are suppose to look. Most angels in books and movies are depicted as beautiful and elegant young, and even sometimes sexy. We as a world have programed to not except deference or not the norm as some would put it.I have decided to check out of the box every now and then and to think for my self and decide wether I believe or at least do some reseach on the situation. not to be judgemental have a open mind. It's hard when you have been programmed your whole life. I do believe it never to late to have a open mind!! The world is a open opprotunity, what you make of it is your own destinty and how you see the world through your own eyes.
ReplyDeleteI think many people have preconceptions, because of their life experience. Thus, some times we can't see the truth of things objectively. Several months ago, on the britain's got talent show, an old lady named Suzan from a small village, before she sang, very body judge her only by her looking, but her sing skill actually surprized every one.
ReplyDeleteI think some times we should not depend on our experience too much, to see the truth by ourself.
I saw that episode that MingTao mentioned, and I think that's a very good example for this topic. Looks are always deceiving, and sometimes people can’t get past the looks. Another example is the typical “only a friend” scenario. A girl’s best friend isn’t “her type”, so she looks for the jerks that are “her type”, even if that best friend is the best one for her. People are too blinded by how things are supposed to appear rather than how things really do appear.
ReplyDeleteEvery person owns his preconceptions. Preconceptions are based on individual's experience, feelings and viewpoint. As a result, people see things more subjectively than objectively. Sometimes these subjective preconceptions lead narrow views and regardless of long-term benefit. Like many developing countries, in order to develop their economy rapidly, many industries modernize a lot, and this lead to a lot of environmental pollution and a great deal of population. However, they ignore these significant problem but focus on the speed of developing economy, therefore, more and more environmental problems happen. Until the time that they find environment is difficult to bear their actions, they begin taking some measures to protect the environment. I think this is a good lesson drawn from our narrow preconceptions led to miss out the important aspects of our lives.
ReplyDeleteHe is treated as a circus animal. They see him as someone that is living around their house temporarily. They have no intentions on letting him stay. They refer to the man as an angel, but he isn’t treated as one should be. They throw him in the chicken coop and let people throw things at him. I don’t know why they would treat an angel like this, but perhaps the family wants to perceive him as a miracle. Perhaps his stay is lessening their belief of angels. Seeing the old man everyday lowers their faith in the rest of the magic in the world. Maybe that is why they want him to gone. “He was no longer an annoyance in her life but an imaginary dot on the horizon of the sea” (932). Maybe Elisenda is glad that he is gone because she can continue living life normally – without an angel literally looking over her shoulder.
ReplyDeleteI think all of us have preconception, so we cannot treat and handle problems objectively and correctly. There is a Chinese saying, “Judging people solely by their appearance.” That is completely wrong, but people still do it. We still carry preconception to face our life and society, it makes us loss a lot treasure. Such as a supervisor considers you cannot do that job subjectivity, so he doesn’t give chance for you, no matter you can or not, but because of his preconception, he probably loss a talent. So, I think everyone should open our mind, accept more culture, making decisions don’t depend on our experience, don’t judging a book by its cover.
ReplyDeleteOops, my second comment was for #4.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think so. It is very hard for people to accept something that they don't know. I used to think about the the source of fear. I found that people afraid of all the things that out of control or against their expectation. Therefore, lots of people prefer to live in their own little world, rather than to explore the unknown world, the truth. So lots of so-call "common sense" become the fetters of our mind.
ReplyDeleteIt is why creativity so important. Creativity also means to break free from the chains of all the rules, accept the new thing and new thought. It's the power of the advance.
