To the White Fiends #5

Do you think this poem is still relevant? Is racism still a major problem in the United States? Are there some ethnic groups that suffer worse than others?

  1. Racism is still a problem in U.S. and it is a problem for all countries all over the world. Becasue people always want a good job, get good respect, enjoy a wonderful life...etc. People in certain race they don't want to lose the privilege they already have so that they abuse other groups/ races' right. For example in the peom, black were slaves and even after they got civil right later, the White still treated them as low class, because white want the old way so that they can always stand on a higher position and have more privileges. Eventhough racism is not that obvious like before which is a good sign. However, as long as the different exist, racism come with it. Black or races don't speak English will always suffer worse than others.

  2. Although the problem of killing and oppressing isn't the case, I still believe that racism exists in the United States. In school, the Asians are the smart ones. The Latinos are the ones that are good at soccer. The African Americans are the ones that steal things. These stereotypes affect everyone negatively because people label one another by their race and not by their individual status. America is accustomed to discriminating one another by race. Unfortunately, bad habits are usually hard to break, so I think that racism will always be a problem.

  3. Yes, racism is definitely still relevant in the United States as well as the whole world for that matter. Everyone is racist to some extent; I don't care who you are I know for sure that everyone has at least some kind of racial tendencies. As liberal as I am and I try to be I can honestly say that I too am a product of this world we live in. I'm not a racist that runs around generalizing people, but those stereotypes are still in the back of my head. To me stereotypes are not always bad, its only how you view them. I personally think they are hilarious because most of the time they are true! If everyone would be able to see the humor and beauty in our differences rather than viewing them negatively the world would be such a happier place.

  5. I mentioned one time in front of an American group of people, that I take racism class. I was asked if that interests me. I tried to explain that it is rather shocking to hear about all the forms of oppression directly from my classmates who themselves were Blacks, Mexicans or Chinese. "Why do not they return back to Africa than?" At that point are realized how ignorant people are and that made me angry. "Because they have been living here for a longer period of time than you," I replied to one of the individual named Michael who himself, paradoxically, was only the second generation of his family living in the US. "Do not you think that they have a reason and rights to call this country home? Do not you feel like being at home here yourself?"

I added that just because he is "lucky" to blend in easy thanks to his skin tone, does not give him any rights to judge others in the different-harder situation. The worst thing that made me furious was the presence of Mike's five years old daughter. I am sure that she looks at this matter in the same way like her father...older generation passes into younger one.

According to the stories of the oppressed ones and the discussion with Mike, I believe that racism is still a big part of the US society and that it is not going to disappear any time soon.

  6. Historically most colonialist white people have dominated and mistreated Africans, Native Americans, Latinos, Jews, Asians, Italians and Irish people. Throughout the years we have seen those immigrant groups straggled for freedom and equality. Their straggle and determination for their right has played a big roll in building the United States of America. When we compare racism in the past and now we can see a tremendous difference.
For the first question, I don’t think the poem is relevant in the United States any more because black people are not killed or jailed because of their ethnicity any more. History has changed, we have a black president. In the other hound the poem is relevant to humanity; the main point of the poem is solving violent with peace and love.
For the second question, Yes, racism still exists in the United States. The United States is build with multi-ethnic population and this causes racism between the different ethnic groups. I believe as people became educated and get to know one another more racism will disappear in the near future. We have to remember that through straggle and commitment slavery was abolished in the past. Why not racism?
For the third question, I believe Native Americans and African Americans have suffered the worst in the past and are still suffering now. This is due to economy and education level of the two ethnic group compare with other ethnic groups.

  7. This poem would be relevant, but only to a degree because America has significantly diversified from the black and white society that existed decades ago. Although asserting blacks to better themselves, the unpopular theme of nationalism and elusively segregation should be rejected.

Of course, racism is still a problem today in the United States, especially with popular culture. Despite efforts to diversify, racism still remains prominent for discussion. Most notable in rap, the dominant themes of sexism, racism, materialism, and violence still exist today. It is difficult to determine whether this bigotry has diminished throughout the years because it seems to be gradually rising, but it certainly would not simply be white versus black.

Honestly, it depends on how you define “suffer.” Generally, the African-American sub-population is seemingly entering devolution. Looking at how society is warped today, if prominent figures such as Malcolm X or Martin Luther King, Jr. were still here today, they would be flared by the amount of African-Americans that are willingly throwing their educations away and allowing such idiotic music to corrupt their minds. If you take a look at blacks from other countries, you will see that they do not behave like this. I am not generalizing because this is happening to other races as well, whether it is White, Black, Latino, or Asian. However, it is most evident in African-Americans. I will likely be bashed for this, but I am merely speaking my mind. Please do not misconstrue what I am trying to get across.

  8. Racism is still one of the major causes that are a confronting issue in the United State. There are many ethnic groups that suffer from finding employment. Gang War, and rascal criticism.
For some reason people set standard already about what type of job for each ethnic group. They believe the Mexican is to be farmer and construction worker at a cheap price because that what they are skilled to do. While Vietnamese open only massage and nail salon. This kind of attitude about the person ethnicity is the problem that set the mind of other and belief that is passed from parent to child into believing them to be.
In the bay area where I am living there is a Gang War between Black and the Mexican that cause harm to the community where they live and set an emotion of distrust against one another even when walking on the street in certain area where they kill you if you were that ethnic group.
Racism will probably never end if we cannot fully trust one another, unless we can live the life of the enemy that we could understand their problems and differences to be ally that we can hold hand to hand.

  9. This poem is effective to a certain degree. Try as we might, racism is still prevalent in our society. Racism is not only a methodical obstacle in today's society, so too is discrimination. Pertaining to minority ethnic groups, this is especially true in that they aren't given the same opportunity as their domestic White counterparts. For political reasons, they were exiled and forced to live in a country in which we call America. We are not given a race until we come to the United States. Just as Allen puts it, it seems as if targeted minority groups are supposed to be working at targeted professions (What Mexicans is to farmers is Vietnamese to beauty salons). The preconceived notion of what certain ethnic groups should be is most definitely the magnitude of the problems we face everyday in America.

  11. Racism is still a problem in the United States, but it is no longer a major problem. I agree with Gwen on the idea that the stereotype likes to group people by their race. I can find a fresh example for this case. Two days ago, my netbook was stolen by three black girls in the library. My black classmate Kal helped me to call the police, and the black police came and record the case. All of them are black, but some of them are bad persons and some of them are good persons, so we cannot judge or label people just by their race.
I don’t think the racism issue is the major problem in the United States, because when I walk on the street, most of other racial people greet me actively, even though we don’t know each other. I think most of people are nice.

  12. I think racism is not a major problem in the United States though it still exist. I still remember when I just come to the U.S., some of my relatives tell me that black is "Black", white is "white", so don't get close to black. However, only my grandma say,"Black also has good man, white also has bad man, too. Don't judge people on their color." This is the most important lesson that I learn in America. Of course, the discrimination still exist, and it affects many lower social status's people, working class, new immigrants and the people is not white.

  13. The US has made tremendous progress in dealing with racism. The election of the first black president is a milestone in the history of this great country.
Sadly though, there are still a few die-hard racists; the type we saw earlier in the year that went haywire at the War museum in Washimgton. Hate crime is still very much with us.
My hope is on our children and children's children. I believe that they are the ones that will truly make a huge change. We are seeing more inter-racial marriages and liasons amongst the younger ones.

  14. Since U.S. is a multiple cultural country, whose immigrants come from different countries, different race, some conflicts between those happen. These conflicts lead to racial discrimination. Most people consider U.S. is a democratic and liberal country, but I think it is still conservative according to the racial issue. Racism is still a problem in U.S., especially for Asians, Africans and lower class people, but it is not major because it is not seen obviously. For example, most Asians will be considered or targeted to be killed when some unhealthy mental people want to kill persons random. Why don't they choose another ethnic groups people? Only because Asians are quieter and weaker than other ethnic groups? Most Africans and Asians are considered as lower class people since most of them receive benefits from government. Most Africans are treated as bad people, for they do almost all the bad things. Most people hope there doesn't exist racial discrimination any more, but actually in our minds, do we really respect everyone and treat everyone equally?

  15. The poem is still relevant. Although racism is seemingly not as worse as old time, I believe that racism is still existed as long as long as when people think one better than other or there is social division. I know different groups have different needs. But we need to accept them by talk about it and preparing our children for leadership in future; we need not to afraid of conflict. This is only way to cross racial boundaries.

  16. I do not think this poem is still relevant, because although racism is still a problem but is not a major problem in the United States. The United States is consisted of immigrants from many different countries, so there are many people of various races. So, there are some conflicts among the people of different race. However, it is not serious like the problem of racism in 1920s. The size of problem from racism in the present is much smaller than that in the past, 1920s. Thesedays the trend of our soceiey in America opposes the racism in the contrast to the past. There are more gruops that opposes racism than racists thesedays. There is not any specifc ethnic groups that suffer worse than others. In the 1920s, the conflicts happened between the gruops of white and black people but thesedays conflicts occurs between just individuals of different races. In the poem, the autor criticizes the physical oppossition and violence of white racists toward black people. However, there is not any physical oppossition thesedays. Therefore, this poem can not be applied to the present situaion well.

  17. I think racism still a problem in United States today, but not major problems. Surely, racism exist in many aspect of our life, but, I think the racism problem is getting better and better nowadays--there is civil rights movement in 1960s; we have many laws against discrimination ; the main stream of United States society is against racism. Furthermore, I think since United States is a multi-ethnic country, we have get over the racial problem in order to keep the society safe and peace.
Even though the racism not a major problem of United State today, ethnic groups that suffer worse than others, problem because their polulation are two few, and don't have enough Social influence.

  18. Yes, this poem is very relevant and the racism is still a major problem in the United States. Not even blacks or white there are some other ethnic groups are even worse like Cambodian and the Lao’s people. They are not very strong nationalities in the world and they are not well respected from people. Like most of the beauty shops, hair salon and nail shops are own by Vietnamese. Since they don’t have a power in the US and there are lots of people who are not well educated, therefore they don’t have much power in the economics circumstances.

  19. Yes racism is still alive am sad to say it!I think all cultures deal with racism in their own way. I do think that every monority has a place lowest on the pole.Racism is and will always exsist as long as the economy and jobs situations keep going to certain ethnic groups.Like most people stereotype jobs and weed them out to certain groups and living arrangements are made for certain ethnic groups. It almost seem as if some things have already been design before it happens its crazy. Black Americans have had it worst just cause we had to deal with slavery and the cotton fields and the list could go on. I think every culture could argue their race was mistreat unfairly as well. I hope that racism will end and we all can be seen as who or what we want to be.

  20. Yes, I think racism still a major problem in the world not only in the USA, only because there will always be a race that well be the target. People are judging other people by the color of the skin, their behaviors, class or their religions. Any ethnic group can be a target of racism; In the USA, people are from different countries and they all have the different background. I think the immigrants who don’t know how to speak English or work with low-pay jobs are suffering the worse racism in the USA. Anyway, after the time goes by, I hope the racism would be less and less.

  21. Racism happens all over the world like everyone else says. Sure some people might say that racism doesn't happen anymore unlike before where black people had to be slaves for white people and all that. Racism today is much more silent that before, people don't directly quote racism, but instead they do it in other ways. Such as jobs is one important one. I see all kinds of smart people, and yet a majority of the CEOs or whatever are white people. They fidn ways to avoid begin called racist, by placing the people htey feel that cannot be higher than them below them. It is hard for some White people to see another race to be successful, when they see that they see opportunity, they see shame in themselves. They think to themselves that this ia America this is my country I should be better then those otther people. We all suffer from racism, it just depends on who's lucky to get picked first.

  22. Racism is a powerful word; it combines diversity, race and a demeaning spirit towards a group physically different from one's own. It's founded by the conception that we continue considering each race as only capable of a certain life, not only by those being racist by those who allow themselves to be affected by it. This entanglement keeps racism alive to this day.

  23. This poem is still very relevant today. I disagree with all of those who believe that racism is not a major problem in the US anymore, because racism is at the core of the founding of this country under a capitalist-slavery system that created racism as a need to justify its domination and slavery of others such as the robbing of lands and genocide of millions of Native Americans and the slavery of Africans. Presently, it has developed as a capitalist-imperialist superpower, which continues the need of racism to justify the labor and resources exploitation of third world peoples, racism is needed to justify the incarceration of 2.3 million people in the US which over 50% of them are people of color that the US has no more use for their labor, racism is still needed to justify the fact that schools in the US are more segregated now then they were back in Brown vs Board of Education and racism is needed to justify the invasions of Arab countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Palestine. People fail to see the relevance of racism in US society because the rulers of this country have institutionalized racism in a way that is not so obvious. Having a president of a darker shade does not constitute that the US is now a post-racial society when people of color are still subject to live under these conditions. The fact is that racism is a system of oppression that that goes along with how a capitalist-imperialist system needs in order to justify the exploitation and oppression of others, and as long as we live under this system, racism will always remain.

  24. Yes, I do believe that racism is still a major issue in U. S because there are too many minority groups in this country that we don't even know, and it really depends on which location those groups are at. For example : i am asian, living in san francisco , the racism on Asian is much less than in some small town in other state like kentucky or some other state that is lack of Asian . I really think is really depends on which area we are at in U.S , I beleive if that ethnic groups happen to stay in a place that is lack of their people, then racism will occur.I once seen " The Tyra Show" they have an eposide talking about racism in U. S, base on the research on that show, Tyra said that Racism in Afican American is still a very big issue that compare to other races, even though other ethnic groups might be small, but the numbers of racism on Afican American is still very high.
