The Farewell Party #3

Explain the shift that occurs in the story (1204) when the doctors finally emerge from the shadows.

  1. When the doctors surfaced from the dark, Bina and Raman were finally able to let loose and really enjoy themselves with their real friends -- the doctors. Bina was able to do what she wanted to do all night -- to apply Citronella on her arms and to let Nono sit on her lap. Raman no longer hogged the Remy Martin to himself. He even urged the doctors to have a glass. I think that the real party began when everyone that didn't matter left and when the doctors, the people who did matter, appeared.

  3. I agree Gwen’s perspective. Also when the doctor finally emerged from the shadows, the author commented, “the party now truly began” (1204). It implies that the doctor is the only true friend that Bina and Raman were waiting for present at the party. The doctor had established a good relationship with Bina’s family than anyone else in the party since he played the most significant part to Nono’s life in curing him. It also reveals the importance of family to Indian traditionally.

  4. I agree with the others in that Ramen and Bina were finally able to mellow out and relax. No longer were they under the radar being judged by all of these people that they didn't really even know or liked. When everyone leaves, one of the doctors says the party has truly began and indeed it did. They were finally with people that were genuinely there for them, their farewell, not like everyone else who just showed up just because. So for the rest of the night they shared a bottle of Remy, listened to one of the doctor's wife sang, and truly enjoyed their final moments together with their friends.

  5. After corporate executives and their wives and other guests are gone the doctors were left at The Farewell Party. Ramen and Bina were exited and more relax around the doctors. They all felt happy to be able to have time with the people who have a common characteristics and interest.

  6. What made the actions of the doctors different from the other quests was that doctors didn’t pretend like they were the Ramans’ best friends but rather just touched their hearts by the truth, “… although this was the first time they had come the Ramans’ house on any but professional visits, they were not merely friend__ they were almost part of that self-defensive family, the closest to them in sympathy.”(1204). This honest compassion gave the Ramans’ warmth and comfort.

  7. I agree with all of you that the doctor is the only true friend of the Ramen's.

"the party now truly began". Because the doctor is the real friend of Ramen and Bina. And they don't need to pretend that they are very enjoyed the party and feel relief, so they can really enjoy the party now, and do what they want to do.

  8. Nono, Bina's son, until the very end of the story, is not present at the party. It is not until most of the guests have left and only Nono’s doctors remain that he is allowed to join in the party. “the party now truly began” could imply a couple things: first, that while the others re around, Bina feels she cannot relax because she feels like she has to impress them. Since she cannot relax and have fun, the party is not really a party for Bina. However, this fact could also imply that the only true friends present at the party are Nono’s doctors, and since they remain concealed until everyone else leaves, it is not until they emerge that the party starts. Inherent in the latter implication is the fact that because the doctors have grown so close to Nono in treating him, so too did they form a more intimate relationship with the rest of the family than anyone else in the town had. In this manner, the family member that is absent for the majority of the party is indeed the one that has brought the family closest together.
