How would you describe the tone of the poem? What is Senghor saying about this Black Woman?

  1. I would describe the tone of the poem as being sensual and showing admiration. Senghor is trying to express his deep love for his country as compared to a man's love and desire for a woman.

  2. I agree with Danny, I would describe the tone as appreciative. Senghor is praising the Black woman for making his country such a beautiful place. He is saying that the Black woman is the different elements of everything beautiful in his country.

  4. Even though there is some sadness feeling in the poem, the main tone of it is very positive. Is is full of pride and confidence.
The tone is set at the beginning of the poem. "Naked women, black women Dressed in your color that is life, in your form that is beauty" No matter what others' opinions are, Senghor is very proud of the born Color of blacl women, and the African landscapes.
At the end of the poem, it shows the positive tone also. Even though the beauty is passed, "I" Sing it and fix ir for all eternity! Even though the jealous fate reduces "you" to ashes, the ashes will nourish the roots of the lives of black women and the Motherland-Africa.

  6. It has a tone of admiration and pride of the beauty of his African motherland. However it also has a melancholic tone to what has been done to his motherland.

  7. The tone in this poem is of affection to the land, uniqueness and nostalgia to what he assumes will happen to the land. In one paragraph he says "And your beauty strikes me to the heart like the flash of an eagle" here he seems that he is deeply in love with it. At the same time he seems sad about what is happening to Africa where he says "Before jealous fate turn you to ashes to feed the roots of life."
