First, the narrator stuck in between two classes-- America and India. He marries a American, and works in American place so that he is trying to fit more in the American society. On the other hand,In Ameircan point of view, blond and blue-eyed girl is the most attractive one. Living in the society which doesn't fit you the best, you have to follow the most people's taste. Eventhough later on, he wanted to find a Indian prostitute, he can't find the right one, because the huge diffrernce between the two world. I believe it is not the only thing he can't find in America, there are way more problems beside he can't find the "right" prostitue. = =
I agree with Benson point of view. He saw a lot of prostitutes, the most amounts that he slept with are the blond and blue-eyed prostitutes. This is a clearly marked to attract men’s attention. In the following dialog, he was looking for Indian Woman; however he can’t find the right one.
The narrator only slept with blond and blue-eyed prostitutes because that was the standard for the world that he was accustomed to, the world of upper-class White people and lawyers. Due to his insecurity of his own identity he only slept with women of those characteristics to make himself feel as if he belonged in that world. He even went to the extent of marrying a blond haired blue-eyed woman. It didn't even really matter if she was beautiful or not; like he said himself she would be the tenth most beautiful woman in a room. It is hard to even distinct whether he truly loved his wife in the first place or did he just marry her out of insecurity.
I agreed with dtwelved89. Personally it seems awkward and picky that the narrator only slept with the blond and blue-eyed prostitutes. Matter of fact, he slept with blond and blue-eyed prostitutes to attain/receive satisfaction from the world of upper-class he resided. Furthermore, he is also slept with other women since he was sick from the prostitute who did not capable of connecting him with his Indian identity as he was hopping, however, he asked another prostitute when he was in San Francisco, “Do you employ Indian women” (1355). This sentence implies he has never slept with an Indian woman in his life, it is a sign that he wanted to reconcile with his Indian heritage.
The narrator was a lawyer, which was considered as the high class in American society. And, he felt that he was living in the world of white people. In Amercian, white party is generally regarded as the high class. However, in the other hand he felt of inferiority because he was a Native American. The Native American party was considered as the low class in America society. He was confused which class he had to belong. He prefered to live in the world of upper class and he slept only with blond and blue-eyed prostitutes. From his behavor, he tried to conform that he belongs to the upper class of American society by himself. It made him more satisfied to belong the White people party rather than belonging his original ethic group, the Native American.
From the word "only", we can get that maybe he is not so much like white prostitutes, but he likes to stay with them. It means he looks forward to reach the white world, which is consider the higher class in the U.S.A.. He always confuse his racial identity, but of course, he may wants to climb up to the higher level since he is a lawyer. Through looking his behavior, it is not hard to know he is proud of only sleeping with white prostitutes, he can being a role in a white world. I think it is also a dark humor that make readers realize his thought.
the author only slept with blond blue eye prostitute because blond is always protray as beatiful sexy woman, the narrator wife is a blond too, becasue he found out her wife has cheat on him, so he only have sex with blond ladies. In a way, he wants to revenge her and also I think the narrator only attracted to blond and he always think they are beatiful and attrative all the time.Having sex with Blond has gain his own ego higher.
The women with blond and blue-eyed were portrayed as the most beautiful women in the world. All these thoughts were keeping sent to people's minds through all kinds of media. Therefore, sleeping with a woman with blond and blue-eyed is one of a symbols of having a good life for a man. Especially for a man have dark skin, conquering a woman like this can give him achievability.I think it was the reason why the narrator only slept with this kind of prostitutes.
