Why choose the rivers he did? Why those specific rivers? How do they relate to the subject matter of the poem?

  1. Our human evolution history is the same as the river-- long and renewable. River is our treasure and renewable resources, they will not disappear. Our humans will continue from one generation to another, never disappear, too. so he chooses the rivers.

As we see those rivers: Euphrates is a river of southwest Asia flowing about 2,735 km (1,700 mi) from central Turkey through Syria and into Iraq. The Congo is a country of west-central Africa with a short coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The Nile is the longest river in the world through eastern Africa. The Mississippi is the chief river of the United States. And last the New Orleans is a city of southeast Louisiana between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. After researching these specific rivers and city appear in the poem, it is not hard to see that it is a clue that leads people to know – “River” is extremely long, it can start from southwest Asia though Africa to the southeast of Unite State. And each River has its own special geographical position and significant meaning; however, they can still flow together from one to another. It is similar to our humans, no matter what color and race we are, we can still grow up and achieve our dream from one generation to another.

  2. From the poem, we can find that the rivers were most important for the authors. As we knew he wrote about the Euphrates, Congo, Niles and Mississippi and so on. There rivers were famous to the Africans. As we know from poem, there rivers freed those Africans. Even though they lived in the United States, they also know about the Mississippi. From the poem, we could know that the author was proud of himself as one part of Africans because he believed he was flow of human blood in human veins. Also, we could feel that the author faced the trouble lives; however, he still did not give up and keep going living with proud of himself.

  3. I think the writer choose rivers because rivers are the origin of the human history, the ancient hunman civilizations all commenced from the rivers. Furthermore, Nile, Congo, and Mississippi river are important for human--Nile and Congo are the largest and most important in Africa, ancient Egypt and ancient Babylon was first develop because the river provided the water which people needed for planting; Mississippi river also important for American Indians civilization. so the writer choose to write about those rivers. I think he wirter choose to write about rivers because he wants to indicated that African Americans are no different than any other races in United States, they belongs to American soecity, and they are members of the big familiy of United States, so they should be treated equally.

  4. Rivers have been recognized as many to be dominant forces of nature, one that has directly contributed to our prosperity throughout time. He chose those specific rivers because they depicted and analyzed a different perspective of African history. For example, the Euphrates was chosen to symbolize Mesopotamia, whereas the Nile was chosen to give the reader insight to the civilization of Egypt. Essentially, rivers were chosen as the theme because they are literately sources of life. Without the abundance of rivers, great African civilization would not have been able to rise and fall as gracefully as they did.
