Senghor wrote this poem like this (in free verse, ) because he tried to give the readers a sense about his childhood in Africa logically, which he viewed as a form of paradise. He wanted to address directly to the woman of the title, the “Black Woman who gave the poem its theme and uses it to proclaiming black beauty.
There is a lot of conflict in some parts of Africa. The whole deal with blood diamonds, Sierra Leone, child soldiers, etc. has put the idea of Africa in the wrong light. I think Senghor is trying to acknowledge and remind everyone of Africa's beauty, the side that we do not often hear in the news today. This coming from a native of Africa gives us a genuine and different perspective of the country.
I agree with Danny that there are a lot of conflicts in Africa, and people forget that the country is still a magnificent country. Other people can't see pass the unsightly events that Africa has went through. Not only did other people remain pessimists about the country, but they also brought down Africa to better themselves because they were jealous. Senghor was able to see the remaining allure in the country, and he wrote this poem to illustrate the beauty that other people cannot see.
I agree with all of you in that Senghor was trying to let people know the true beauty of Africa but I think rather than to show the beauty of Africa to the world, I think he is trying to remind African people of their country’s beauty. I say this because he mentions how he was shielded by her hands meaning of did not appreciate Africa when she was right in from of him. There for I think it’s a reminder to African people that Africa is a beautiful continent and that we should always love and cherish her as she is rather than trying to change her.
I think Senghor is hoping to achieve the beatuy of being Black and telling the whole world how beautiful Africa is, full of natural resources and hoping his poem will inspire more different people.
I can see that Senghor wants to achieve two purposes in this poem. First, he is tellin all the African to proud of themselves, to love themselves, to believe in themselves. At that time,The world treat the Africa and Africans too unfairly. Black people and Africa have a very hard time. Therefore, Senghor tell them not to give up, but stand up to fight for the justice. Second, he is tring to adjust other people's biases of black people, such as black skin. He is tring to show how beautiful they are.
