8) How important are mirrors? To us, or to you, personally? Have you ever considered how you often and for what purposes you use mirrors? Could you imagine life without mirrors? Discuss the significance of mirrors in your own life, or in the lives of those around you.
Prompt # 8: Mirrors are important for all of us and they are part of everyone’s life every day. Mirrors can be found everywhere, home, restaurant, or in the car; also “mirrors” have another meaning in our life—reflection. In our daily life, everything happens as a mirror which is helping us to see what we need to development. How we feel with someone is a hint of how we feel about the part of us that they mirror (such as: our friends, families, and the people around us). For example: after we were born we didn’t know anything (how to express anger, happiness or sadness. etc) we may learn that from other people.
ReplyDeleteother than vanity reasons, without mirrors or any tape of reflectors that reflect to us we have eyes in order to see one another and we would still be able to see what we looked like. Moreover, if there were no mirrors we wouldn't be vain or narcissistic with our looks in the mirror or be at the least bit conscious when we pass by a mirror.
ReplyDeleteMirror? In my mind, when you talk about mirror, my first thought is “Snow White”. I think most of us know “Snow White” this Disney story. The “evil” queen always ask the mirror, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is fairest of all?" In this example, I think mirror is a living thing and it expresses ourselves. What does it mean? It means we can find our real personality in the mirror. Some of the people will use mirror to improve their talking or speech skill. I saw a book before, but I forgot the name already and it talked about the mirror. Physically, mirror is a thing to help us improve our appearance. Emotionally, it can improve our self-esteem. In “Snow white”, we can know the queen thinks she is the most beautiful woman in the world, but why does she ask the mirror? It is because she doesn’t have enough self-esteem and she wants someone to agree with her. Additionally, the mirror will say, “You, my queen, are fairest of all. But…”
ReplyDelete8. We may think mirrors have nothing special in our lives. They are so ordinary in our lives. We are not easy to sense how great their functions are. The first chapter in my Phy 4C class was “Mirrors”. In the lecture, the instructor introduced those properties of mirrors to us, as well as how people use those properties for multiple purposes on our lives. Mirrors can be found on our cars. We need them for our safety. At home, we need them to ensure our faces are fine before going out. For interior design, they can help an apartment look larger; bring light to a dark corner. There are some buildings with mirror-like walls. Those walls can block the sun light and heat effectively in order to reduce usage of energy on air-conditioning. Mirrors are widely occupied, so we can live without them. If there is no mirror in our lives, we may lose a lot of fun, energy and human lives seriously. Therefore, I don’t think we can live without mirrors.
ReplyDeleteGreat comments on this one so far. Really deep.
ReplyDeleteDo you think most people look at themselves in the mirror without judgment?
Do you think many people these days regret what they see when they look in the mirror?
Are most people satisfied, or pleased with their reflections?
Mirror is directly related to reflection. reflection is an image of ourselves. mirror is important to everyday life. we use mirror as an image to ourselves confidence. and we use mirror want we can't see from behind. without mirror, livies would be difficult,
ReplyDeleteMirror seem just to be an object but in reality they are the object of truth that shown s us the dark side of ourselves that we have locked away. It is a part of imprisonment that we human cast into our very soul that make us the true monster in the story of the book. Just like beauty and the beast where the prince was cast a curse because he care about the outside look of a person inside of the person feeling on the inside.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John "if there were no mirrors we wouldn't be vain or narcissistic with our looks in the mirror or be at the least bit conscious when we pass by a mirror"
ReplyDeleteMirrors are helpful in keeping us safe while driving but too many people depend on mirrors to tell them if they look good or not. In many cases this has led to eating disorders and low self esteem.
I'm not sure I agree with Allen " they are the object of truth that shown s us the dark side of ourselves that we have locked away." We can smile in front of a mirror and still be hiding our true feelings.
For myself personally, in some ways, I wish mirrors are not so abundant and easily obtainable as they are today. The reason for this is because people too fixated on their image that they have neglected their inner beauty. This is slightly going off in a tangent, but I blame corporate media for marketing cosmetics as rampantly as they do today, to the extent where some are not even regulated by the FDA. However, the burden cannot be completely shifted on media; instead people who excessively indulge themselves with such products should also be blamed. Some people have gone to great lengths to change their image these days, including, but not limited to various forms of surgery, cosmetics, and even to the extent of drugs. However, this is not to say that mirrors have not improved our lives, but rather as the misuse of mirrors.
ReplyDeleteIf mirrors were not as readily available as they are today, I strongly believe that the general population would be more content and happier. A great deal of people today, especially young teenage women are so insecure that they heavily rely on cosmetics on the go because they do not feel attractive enough. Unfortunately, pharmaceuticals have exploited this allowing them to produce drugs, such as anti-depressants and estrogen pills, in mass quantities. I personally know a good amount of people who stare at the mirror for an hour or two simply to begin their day. It is difficult for me to understand why people are considered about such superficial things when the world clearly has more important matters that require greater concern.
People using mirror to reflect their own image, so we know what we look like. But I think most people are not satisified when they look at the mirror, the real appearance is not match the imagination. I think mirrors sometimes make us lose our seft-confidence since people concern about their appearance, mirrors just magnifies the problem. I think might be better live without mirrors,or may be less mirror around us, so we can more care about our inner part than our outside.
ReplyDeleteMirror is not strange for us because it is a necessary good for our lives especially for someone who loves beauty. Mirror is honest because it can reflect our actual images, it won't show you are beautiful even we are essentially ugly. Whatever we have any spots on our face, it shows. Additionally, our families, friends, neighborhoods, and co-works also are mirrors. If you treat them with honest, trustful, and generous, the reflections of them are the same. Take some time to look at the mirror, think about who you really are, listen to you families, friends, and co-workers to find out what impression that you are giving them, and keep an open mind to accept their opinions and suggestions, will help us to avoid the mistakes or fall down with the same mistake again. So mirror is important to us.
ReplyDeletewhen I read this story. I got that the author wanted me to see that the body has more parts that are sexual or sexy, besides what society has choosen.I was nice to read how he found her neck to be sexy. beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not just a pretty face or even a body. They used the mirror to see the beauty that was all around them in their every day lifes. could also mean that we walk around all day every day never noticing the beautiful envorinment and people all around. It makes wann take a look at your life. maybe stop and smell the rose's literally. Take notice of where you and stop lookin straight head all the time. We may just miss something special or someone.
ReplyDeleteI think life cannot without mirrors, but cannot rely on the mirrors. I loved to see myself in mirrors when I in secondary school, if I found some blemish in the mirrors, my self-esteem and confidence would lose at once, but after that period, I understand that my self-esteem and confidence should not from the mirrors, but depend on what we do. So I agreed with Alexis, “We can smile in front of a mirror and still be hiding our true feelings”. Mirrors only can tell us what our outlook like, but it cannot tell the truth of what you think and what you want. Mirror is a tool that helps us to identify what we are now, but the following decision should make by ourselves. Of course, most people satisfied their reflections because what they saw in the mirrors at that moment was from what they did before, that was the result of their action in the mirrors.
ReplyDeleteMirror is really important to me, I don't think i could live without it. The purpose of a mirror is a reminder to myself, to remind me did I dress properly , did I gain weight recently , and obviously it reminds me I am getting old too. I could see the difference of me everyday in the mirror. We Chinese also have a saying that mirrors are never supposed to be face towards the bed, because we believe that there are some spirit inside it, for example, it could capture the ghost through the mirror. If the mirrors happens to face the bed, usually, we will use something to block the mirror instead of looking through ourselves directly. If we don't have mirrors ever invented, we will never improved our out looking.I have a mirror at home that when ever my friends come around they will be so joyful and also suggesting me that i should really get another one because that mirror could make a person look a lot skinner. They suggest me to do that because they said I should not keep something that lies to me.
ReplyDeleteThe mirror is always a very useful tool to everyone, both vain, parochial or serious. To the vain mind, the mirror serves the chief purpose of reflection of beauty which reinforces ego; or some physical flaws, which must be worked on or removed altogether.
ReplyDeleteFor the more mature mind, looking into the mirror calls for some soul-searching-- it becomes a time for sober reflection. That is when you begin to talk to the "man in the mirror" as Michael Jackson preached.
I hardly look into the mirror except when I am shaving and grooming myself in the morning; and also when that still, small voice of calm tells me I have done something wrong. You would usually find me at such times, locked up in my bathroom and starring hard at myself in the mirror. There is a twist to this however; I do not see a reflection of me at such times but that of my late father. Perhaps it may be due to the fact that I am a split image of him but I am usually comvinced it is much more than that.
This experince is usually overwheming for me and I am always moved to tears. I could then make some effort to right my wrong. That is how powerful a tool the mirror is for me!
In my opinion, I think mirrors are really important to all of us. Mirrors are the most honest thing in the whole world and it never tell lies. If we don't have mirror in the world than we will never saw our face clearly. The reflection shown from the mirrow are all turth. People might feel happy or sad after looking a mirror. However, I think we can improves our appearence and our outlook through the mirrors.
ReplyDeleteWithout mirrors, we’d have to depend on an outside opinion or our own feelings of comfort, to determine if we are physically presentable for our environment. The question makes me think about how insecure people are without knowing it. We frequently consult with a mirror to determine if we look okay for our environment, a lot of us rarely determine how presentable we are just based on how we feel.
