I would say Kyoko's love for her first husband was more powerful than the love for her second husband. Kyoko and her first husband seemed to have shared an epic romance together that ended tragically. Her second husband seems to be an attempt by Kyoko to fill in the gaps of heart left by her passed lover. Though she is with her new husband, Kyoko will forever cherish the memories with her first love as they would gaze upon the moon on the water, alone just them two, in their secret world hidden in the mirror.
Excellent comment, dtwelve89-- do the rest of you agree? Is her second husband only someone to fill part of the space left by the "epic romance" of her first marriage?
I think Kyoko’s love for her first husband was more powerful than her second husband. According to the article, Kyoko was married with her first husband during the war, at that time, her first husband was sick; Kyoko was taking care of him. They have a lot of memories, such as two hand mirrors, garden, and musty leather. She always takes a look, keeps the secret with her second husband, and she doesn’t want her second husband thought she had to be coquettish. Those actions can tell she love her first husband more, even though her first husband was dead.
I also agree with Ivory’s idea. By compared from Kyoko’s first husband and her second husband from the story, I think Kyoko loves her first husband more than her second husband. In fact, from the topic, we may think about how “The moon on the Water”, it because of the mirrors. In fact, in our real lives, it’s hard for us to forget our first lover. Because it’s first time we know how to care about another people; because it’s first time we know the feeling of being protected; and because it’s first time we know what’s the love is.
I do not think her second husband only someone to fill part of the space left by the epic romance of her first marriage. As ivory Lee said, Kyoko always take a look and hide secret with her second husband- because she does not want to share her memories with her first love to her second husband, because the more she tells her second husband, the more she is hurting her second husband directly. How would one feel if his/her lover keeps talking about his ex-boyfriend or girlfriend memories as they are dating? Personally, I will feel upset.
I agree with raisinskl’s opinion that Kyoko’s second husband is not only someone to fill part of space. Also, I agree with she didn’t share her memories with her first love to her husband because she don’t want to hurt her second husband. However, I still believe her first husband is more powerful than her second husband. In fact, she didn’t want to share her secrets because she was afraid of her second husband’s thinking. In personally, if I share my secrets to my boy-friend, he would quarrel with me. He would think I do not love him enough. I think he is jealous .As time goes on, I recognized that if we share that with our boy-friends or girl-friends, it would make our relationships not good enough. I think that’s why for most people don’t want to do that because their boy-friends and girl-friends cared about that. Also, I think that is why love is called possessive。Possessive is a human common.
The love for her first husband was incomparable to the second one where Kyoyko knew to extract a love out of the suffering of her husband. Eventhough it does not mention the love she had for her second huband she wouldn’t have married him if she didn’t love him, but, everything in the story starting from the hand mirro to the garden and her way of treating her ill husband as a child is due to cost less love she had for him.
