As the text states, the reflection of the garden gives him inexhaustible joy, as if a lost world of fresh green had come back. Her first husband lie on his bed all day, and the fresh air, fresh green outside the room is too extravagant for him. Her first husband said, “I can see the earthworms from here, though.”(p666) The thing that we can see everyday, for a dying patient, is so precious. No one can imagine the ordinary garden is so important for the dying man who lying on bed all day. It gives him the hope of life, and the fun of life.
Kyoko bought the mirror to give a “new life” to her first husband, and her husband did it. Before getting the mirror, he could not do anything except staying in bed and staring at the wall. He felt depressed and hopeless. However, when he could have a view to the outside world through the mirror, the garden played a role of hope in his mind. At least every day, there existed something that he could look forward and have fun besides wait for death at home. I guess maybe he would imagine one day he could be healthy and go outside to visit this garden in person when he looked at the garden through the mirror. This ordinary garden could rekindle his fighting spirit and hope of new life.
