2) Discuss the significance of the hand mirror for Kyoko.

  1. For Kyoko the hand mirror acts as a gateway between this world and the world in the mirror that she shares with her first husband. Even though he is dead now, he still lives on in the world in the mirror. Therefore, Kyoko holds onto the hand mirror because it is the only thing still holding the two together. She feels if she gets rid of the hand mirror, she would ultimately be throwing away the memory or letting go of her first husband.

When you loose someone you care about it is hard to even think about getting rid of their things. For Kyoko the mirror wasn't just a gift for her first husband it was a reflection of the memories they had shared. Not keeping it would be like rejecting her own past with him.

  3. Actually, she already gets rid of the mirror, as it melts with the coffin, and she only keeps the mirror stand, but she doesn’t get rid of the memory with her first husband. When she misses his first husband sometimes, she feels some kind of guilty to his current husband; but as his current husband mentions something about her first husband, such as she doesn’t have a child with her former husband, she feels she is offended. I think her feeling is so complicated; she is struggling on the feelings between her two husbands, and struggling in the past and the real life……..

  4. Since the hand mirror give Kyoko's husband a "new world", it's the spiritual supportiveness of Kyoko's dying husband, so Kyoko gave her hand mirror to her husband, in order to let him happier. I think, for Kyoko, she realized her husband was dying, she can't reduce his pain, and the only thing she can do is give him at least some happiness at the end of his life. Thus, gave her husband the mirror is a method that Kyoko to make her husband happier, cantains Kyoko's love and bless to him. I also think Kyoko might have a little hope-- her husband might recovery due to a happier mood.

  5. The importance of the hand mirror to Kyoko is all based on the happiness of her husband who found a new world through the reflection of the hand mirror. It was not only the vegetable garden that he husband observed through the mirror but also the clouds, snow, distant mountains and other views that can be seen through the window of his house. When night comes it is through this mirror that was seeing the moon and in the morning the birds and the wildflowers. Kyoko was very amazed at the richness of what she was seeing in the mirror and was bale to distinguish the difference between one thing seen through the mirror and through naked eyes. For example the sky shined silver in the mirror when it is gray seen by her eyes. And this is why Kyoko wanted to call the mirror the eye of their love for it has always renovated their love.

  6. Kyōko is able to enjoy and view the world first hand. She is able to go out and be intimate with nature, unlike her husband who is bedridden. When you are able to go out and explore the world freely, you rarely look for the small things that happen right in front of you. You usually make a plan and you set out to complete it. When you are unable to move freely, it seems that it would be more likely that you will look for beauty and entertainment in everything around you. The mirror provides the bond that allows Kyōko and her husband to share that world. With the mirror, Kyōko’s first husband is able to see the things outside of the room, which could be considered Kyōko’s world, and Kyōko is able to sit with her husband and learn to appreciate the small things that they notice through the mirror.
